Source:2014-07-09

July 7 (Sohu sports) “…very happy,” “so excited…” Wang Bingyu, leader of Chinese women’s curling team, couldn’t help but express her excitement after learning that Beijing will bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics. She hoped to take part in curling event together with her teammates for the country in Beijingin eight years to come.

On July 7, 2014, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will declare candidate cities for the 2022 Winter Olympics. If successful, Beijing will enter the preparatory phase for the event asa candidate.Any winter sports athlete will be exhilarated by this, including Wang Bingyu.

Recently, Wang Bingyu has been in vacation and watched the 2014 FIFA World Cup. She said, “The Olympic Games are the event of highest level and a quadrennial worldwide comprehensive competition like the FIFA World Cup, which even fake soccer fans like me to burn the midnight oil to watch.”

On November 3 last year, the Chinese Olympic Committee officially corresponded to the IOC to nominate Beijing to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics. According to the bidding program, Beijing and Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province will jointly bid for the 2022 Games. Beijing will reuse and transform the venues of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games to undertake ice events; Beijing’s Yanqing County will hold alpine skiing; Zhangjiakou’s Chongli County will organize other ski events.

Wang believed the bid would greatly drive the development of winter sports and social growth in China. She said, “The bid will firstly improve the public awareness of the Winter Olympics because most people still can’t differentiate between the Winter and Summer Olympics. Secondly, the act will push forward the construction of winter facilities and venues in Beijing to universalize winter events.” Wang added, “The move would have a more important meaning from comprehensive prospective, the Winter Olympics would stimulate the Beijing’s economic and cultural progress for it requires universal support from volunteers, hotels to facilities construction.”

As the flagship of the Chinese women’s curling team which is made up of Wang Bingyu, Liu Yin, Yue Qingshuang and Zhou Yan, Ms. Wang led the team to win the gold prize of the 2009 World Women'sCurlingChampionship and the bronze prize of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. With growing age, she and her teammates have got married one after another; there will be fewer opportunities for them to compete together. Some of them had thought the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics may be the last chance for them to play the curling. Finally, the Chinese women’s curling team regretfully took the seventh place in Sochi.

Beijing’s bid aroused the Wang Bingyu’s interest. “Hearing that Beijing bids for the 2022 Winter Olympics, I feel very happy. And I will be very proud and so excited if I can join in the curling competition as an athlete from the host country,” said Ms. Wang. However, she was aware that it may be just an “ideal” for her and her team in eight years.

According to Wang Bingyu, “Chinese athletes contribute so much to their career. We often have to train and compete out of home, which tests not only our will and quality, but also that of our families.” Getting married last year, Ms. Wang has not been aware how much her family do for her until she goes back home for a holiday these days. She added, “Liu Yin has a child, she and her family must give up more reunion time.”

Wang still expected to compete in curling in Beijing with other three teammates. “All of us are very excited that we may have a chance to compete in Beijing. However, there are eight years to go; it is hard to say we four are able to do that. But we hope and expect that.”
